This unit will enable participants to explore the nature of spirituality and how our definitions and conceptualisations of spirituality impact our spiritual care. This unit will also briefly introduce spiritual assessment and care plans. This Micro-Credential unit will enable participants to explore some of the key values undergirding quality practice in spiritual care. The unit will cover the following topics:

  1. Definitions and conceptualisations of spirituality and how they affect our spiritual care of people
  2. Attentive listening and ‘presence’ in effective spiritual care
  3. Spiritual Assessment & Care Plans
  4. Critical self-reflection

Learning outcomes

Articulate understanding of the key spiritual care values of equity, diversity and dignity of all persons.

Explore the nature of person-centred care and spiritual care as not proselytising
3.

Discuss ‘culture’ and evidence-based research concerning recent cultural shifts in religious and spiritual identity in Australia, and corresponding rituals in the provision of spiritual care.
4.

Practice critical self-reflection to guide own formation as a spiritual care practitioner.
