Understanding the governance principles, concepts and frameworks will equip leaders with the tools to operate within a changing, complex and demanding environment. Governance can be observed at a number of levels, including national, state, local, not for profit and volunteer orgnisations. Leadership is required to oversee the delivery of services via governance protocols and procedures. This unit provides students with the theoretical knowledge and practical methods, frameworks and tools to evaluate, analyse, and discuss policy and governance frameworks and financial practices in their organisations. They will have the opportunity to develop governance policy, analyse various governance models and their applications in the areas of risk, safety, quality and financial accountability.
Students will have opportunities to develop knowledge and generic skills to enhance their competencies in communication; analysis and inquiry; problem solving and informed decision-making; financial accountability and resource management; risk and information management; and working independently and collaboratively with others. Learning outcomes

Interrogate various concepts and models of governance taking into consideration different situations, issues and challenges to good governance

This is a core unit in the Graduate Diploma in Leadership and Master of Leadership

Pedagogy

All learning material including video lectures and practitioner interviews are accessible on the Learning Management System asynchronously. The learning material are divided up in six modules with specific topics in each module. Students will need to attend a weekly webinar on a weeknight to engage with the tutor and discuss the learning material and assessments. The students will also need to attend two intensive days on the second and fourth Saturdays of the Teaching Period that will be run as workshops to discuss the topics and engage with supplementary learning material and practical exercises and scenarios relevant to the topics of the unit.

A series of online discussion forums where students are set a task to research, or a video to watch, an interview to conduct, or an article to read. They will need to discuss what they have learned in 200 words. Then they are required to critically review two other student's forum posts by writing about 100 words.

Case Study - Governance Project

The student will analyse different factors influencing the governance framework and outcomes in a specific organisation (student's or a case study), assess the governance and develop a governance framework based on theories, government policies, laws and good governance standards.

The student will undertake a critical evaluation project to examine the various governance models identifying issues, risk triggers, and emerging factors affecting the oversight practice and conduct of boards and governing bodies, based on theoretical concepts and extensive research literature.
