This unit is designed to give the student an introduction to the concept and practice of mission and its priority for the people of God. It explores the topic of mission from a biblical, theological, historical and cultural perspective. It enables the student to develop and apply concepts of mission in their local context.

Learning outcomes

1.

Articulate a biblical and theological understanding of Christian mission

2.

Identify developments in Christian mission in different eras of church history to the present time.

3.

Identify selected key current cultural and sociological issues on the practice of mission for the church, including ecclesiology, colonisation, cross cultural mission and contemporary social movements.

4.

Explain the concept and practice of holistic mission within The Salvation Army context.

5.

Apply perspectives covered in this unit to the contemporary practice of Christian mission

Pedagogy

In an asynchronous environment students will engage carefully designed learning materials which may include readings, audio and video materials, a variety of learning activities, response to questions, refection upon practice. They will also attend structured synchronous online engagement sessions which will promote peer to peer engagement and learning.
