The creation of the sacred space in Orthodoxy represents one of the most creative expressions of its theology. Holy images and the relics of saints constitute an integral dimension of liturgical life and worship in Christian Orthodox traditions and represent important components of diverse hierotopic projects. This unit examines the form, function, theological significance, and devotional use of holy icons and sacred relics, with particular attention to their veneration within the Coptic and Byzantine Orthodox traditions. This unit will examine how the visual and sensory dimensions of Orthodox worship communicate theological meaning and shape the experience of the sacred, while also considering the historical and theological development of practices surrounding holy images and relics.
