Content

This unit is an introduction to the Lutheran Confessions as contained in the Book of Concord. It concentrates on the overall content of the Lutheran Confessions, especially the Augsburg Confession and the Apology, the Smalcald Articles and Luther’s Catechisms, to help students appreciate the background and main themes of the confessions for the study of theology and for the life of the church.

Learning outcomes

1.	Demonstrate an integrated understanding of the basic tenets of the Christian faith as expressed in the Lutheran symbols (the Book of Concord)
2.	Demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of the major theological teachings of the Lutheran Church and their historical development
3.	Explain the structural centrality of the doctrine of justification for the theology of the Lutheran Confessions generally and for the Augsburg Confession and its Apology in particular
4.	Critically reflect on the theology of the Lutheran Confessions’ deeper internal integration and unity, and their implications for vocational life and service in the Christian church
5.	Research theological themes, using appropriate primary and secondary sources

Pedagogy

This unit is underpinned by teaching practices and strategies (lecturer input, seminar discussion, group analysis exercises) which encourage student engagement and participation in a variety of learning tasks and opportunities which foster deep learning.
