This unit will examine the mystery of the Church, and the nature and principles of ecumenism. The foundation and early development of the Church will be presented together with ecclesial images and models. The marks of the Church together with the nature and role of the Magisterium will be examined. This will lead to reflection on the communion and mission of the church. Examination of the ecumenical movement in recent history will flow into a consideration of theological convergence arising from ecumenical dialogue and lead to a presentation of “Receptive Ecumenism” as a model for dialogue.

Learning outcomes

Define the images and models of the Church.
2.

Explain the nature and role of the Magisterium.
3.

Relate the marks of the Church to an understanding of the communion and mission of the Church in the world today.

Describe the history of the modern ecumenical movement and the Roman Catholic Church’s entry into that movement.
5.

Identify and explain the Church’s teaching on Ecumenism in the documents of the Magisterium, Unitatis redintegratio (1964), the Directory for the Application of Principles and Norms on Ecumenism (1993) and the vision outlined in Pope John Paul II’s Ut unum sint (1995).
