Loss and grief are normal human experiences. However, when they overwhelm a person’s ability to cope their mental health and wellbeing are negatively impacted. Using the bio-psycho-social model this unit will explore: (1) the psycho-biology of stress; (2) effective helping for a variety of losses faced by people; (3) stages of grief, complex grief, and grief counselling; and (4) traumatology with a focus on trauma-informed counselling to promote post-traumatic growth.

Prohibited combinations: CO1003Z Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, And Decision-Making; Virtues-Based Counselling: Working With Hope, Courage, And Compassion
Scaffolded learning. Tutorial and Intensive format over 8 weeks. The compulsory intensive will be 29 hours in duration over four consecutive days held in week 5. Mornings will use synchronous on-line learning and afternoons will use activity-based face-to-face learning. The remaining 7 weeks will utilise weekly asynchronous on-line learning and 1 hour of synchronous on-line learning (i.e., non-compulsory tutorial).
