Note: sessions 1 and 2 do not require the textbook and have been rewritten as lecture notes and some exercises done in class.

Session 1: Introduction, language learning techniques, how to study, a guide to grammatical terms - cases, word order, gender, nouns, verbs, participles, prepositions etc., 1st, 2nd declensions.

Session 2: Present tense of esse (to be). Introduction to Latin verbs: person, tense, mood, number, voice, principal parts. Imperfect and Future tenses of sum, adjectives. Present active 1st conjugation.

Session 3: Present active 2nd, 3rd, 3rd –io, and 4th. Different uses of the ablative. Indicative passive – all four conjugations. Complex sentences with subclauses. Relations between main and subordinate clauses. Future indicative active and passive tense.

Session 4: Uses of infinitives. Relative pronouns. Perfect active indicative tense (NB: subjunctives are not covered in this unit, but in Intro. Eccl. Latin AL1302C/9302C). Pluperfect and future-perfect active tenses. Modal verb posse (to be able/could), infinitives (cont’d), perfect passive tense.

Session 5: Pluperfect passive tense. Uses of ablative and dative cases. 3rd, 4th, 5th declension nouns. Third declension adjectives. Introduction to participles. Irregular verbs velle, ire (to will, to go).

Session 6: Uses of the accusative and ablative cases. Future active participles, future passive participles, periphrastic constructions. Fifth declension nouns. Vocative case. Personal pronouns.

Session 7: Overflow of material from earlier sessions. Text reading from Collins, revision, exam overview.
